Land Rover is known worldwide for rugged vehicles that can take you anywhere you want to go, wrapped in luxurious sophistication. To uphold their class-leading reputation, Land Rover tasks their Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) with developing unique vehicles for extraordinary clients. One of the more challenging SVO projects was designing and building a gourmet kitchen on wheels for British celebrity chef and successful restauranteur Jamie Oliver. The result is a truly amazing Land Rover Discovery with a complete gourmet kitchen, including a slow cooker in the engine bay, a toaster in the console, and wheels that churn butter or make ice cream while driving!
Land Rover and Jamie Oliver create the ultimate kitchen on wheels
Jamie Oliver’s Land Rover kitchen on wheels is a 2017 Discovery, powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine. The amenities include a custom aluminum sink, a dual-burner stove, and a spice drawer built into a foldable kitchen worktop that doubles as a dining table. Oliver was astonished to find a five-quart slow cooker in the engine bay, a living herb garden externally mounted near the right rear window, and a two-slice toaster integrated into the center console. Said Oliver, “I gave Land Rover a massive challenge to create the ultimate kitchen on wheels. I dreamed big and asked for a lot, and what they’ve done has blown my mind. I didn’t think they’d actually be able to put a slow-cooker next to the engine and an olive oil dispenser in the rear storage space, but they did.”
You can imagine his surprise when he examined the wheels, each of which has an aluminum casing with a counterweighted stationary receptacle and a paddle connected to the wheel nuts. The devices on three of the wheels can each make five quarts of butter, while the other device can turn out five quarts of ice cream. Oliver is looking forward to hitting the road with his family, filling up the Discovery’s seven seats, saying, “This unique creation means we can take our culinary adventures to the next level.”
Land Rover’s SVO team, which prides itself on making the impossible happen, probably never thought they’d have to combine their automotive design skills with gourmet cooking skills, but that’s just one of the many challenges of working in the SVO department. David Fairborn, SVO chief, said, “As a team, we never imagined we would be asked to produce wheels that churn butter so it has been great fun working alongside Jamie to bring his vision to life. He really wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible with this versatile vehicle and the team fully embraced the challenge.” Oliver wanted a rotisserie and thought a pasta cutter would be nice to have and voila, they magically appeared. The SVO team cleverly added a power take-off mechanism to the Discovery’s engine, with an external connection hidden behind a movable “Land Rover” emblem on the grille. The rotisserie or the pasta cutter can be quickly connected to the external power take-off when it’s time to cook.
Oliver is particular about using fresh ingredients for his dishes and the SVO team didn’t let him down. They provided a living herb garden that accommodates up to eight herb plants in an external bin near the right rear window; a spice rack for 11 spice jars in the left rear window; a salt and pepper grinder; and what may be the pièce de résistance of the project, an olive oil and vinegar dispenser mounted in the tailgate. To keep everyone entertained while dinner is being prepared, there’s a 40-inch flat screen TV with connectivity.
The Land Rover Kitchen on Wheels comes to Smorgasburg LA
Jamie Oliver’s special Land Rover Discovery made its American debut on November 26, 2017 at Smorgasburg LA, an open-air food market held every Sunday in downtown Los Angeles. Oliver said, “As Smorgasburg is renowned for being one of the most innovative and creative food markets, I couldn’t think of a better place for my custom Land Rover Discovery to make its first appearance in the U.S.!”
Hosted by Oliver’s friend and fellow celebrity chef Donal Shekan and assisted by Chef Caroline Artiss, they conducted cooking demonstrations at the Kitchen on Wheels of Oliver’s Banh Mi recipe (a classic Vietnamese baguette sandwich). Proceeds from the sales of the Banh Mi benefitted Food Forward, a local non-profit organization dedicated to recovering surplus produce and donating to those in need.
Smorgasburg LA showcases innovative flavors from the city’s most exciting food vendors. The Holiday Market, which began on November 26, features LA’s best local makers, designers, and vintage collectors in addition to the regular food and shopping vendors. Chef Shekan noted, “I am delighted to work with Jamie again on this project and bring this idea to life at Smorgasburg LA. Together with Land Rover, he has created the ultimate chef’s vehicle and I’m looking forward to serving up the holiday Banh Mi from his kitchen on-the-go for my fellow Angelenos!”
