Stranger Things, the Sci-Fi TV show that was first released in 2016 on Netflix, features quite a few iconic cars from the ‘80s. Let’s take a look below at five of these cool autos.
1980 Chevrolet K5 Blazer
Chief Jim Hopper’s police car is an ‘80 Chevrolet K5 Blazer. It’s evident that it’s a 1980 truck because that was the only year the Blazer featured single rectangular headlights. In 1979 the headlights were round and starting in 1981 the Blazer sported four lights, two on each side. The Blazer was the smallest full-size SUV version of the Chevrolet family, and it was introduced in 1969. This one has a 4×4 front engine, rear-wheel-drive truck that is the same color as the chief’s uniform.
1976 Ford Pinto
Joyce drives a moss green ‘76 Ford Pinto, named after the Pinto pony. This car was one of the cheapest cars on the market at the time. You can tell this is a ‘76 because of that one-year grille-and-indicator setup. It’s a front-engine, rear-drive subcompact car. In 1977, controversy bubbled up regarding the car’s fuel tank design, which was linked to a heightened risk of deadly fires after rear-end collisions.
1971 Ford LTD
Jonathan drives a Ford LTD in the series. The car looks a bit rough, but cars of that era were certainly capable of looking pretty bad after only a few years on the road. The LTD was only manufactured 1965-1986. It was the largest vehicle produced by Ford, and at different times throughout its production the model range included 2-door/4-door pillared and hardtop sedans, a 2-door convertible and the station wagon.
1981 BMW 733i
Steve drives a 1981 BMW 733i. This is definitively the most expensive car of the series, which also make sense, since he’s one of the wealthier characters of the show. The 733i was part of the first generation of the BMW 7 Series of luxury cars that was produced 1977-1987. It featured some electronic accessories never seen before in a BMW, including an on-board computer and a complex climate control system. It was also the first BMW to offer an ABS system, a driver’s airbag and a new front suspension design.
1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet
Barb’s VW was an ’80s favorite; every teen wanted to own one and it’s a pretty popular car one can sport in sitcoms and rom-coms from the same decade. It was sold 1980-1993. We get only a few glimpses of the cute baby-blue car in this series, and it outlives its owner.
There are several other cars that make an appearance in the show, like a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442, a 1984 Toyota Camry Liftback, a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro, a Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park and a Ford Crown Victoria.
Our favorite car from the show is the 1988 Volkswagen Cabrio. Let us know in the comments below which car is near and dear your heart.
