The Fastest Luxury SUV

Bentley has been building luxury cars and SUVs for almost 100 years. They’ve had the Mulsanne, Flying Spur and Continental Range for a while now, but have recently added the Bentayga SUV and Continental GT coupe.

The Bentayga is not your average SUV. In fact, its cost is almost as much as three new Range Rovers. Bentayga is the fastest SUV ever built so it can propel you 0-60 in 4 seconds which is amazing considering it’s a full-size SUV. The Bentayga is the best combination of comfort, technology, power and speed. If you like your SUV tailored to your taste, then you found it here. They have a team dedicated to building bespoke models.

It takes 15 cows to upholster just one Bentayga. This means the attention to detail here is on another level. Leathers are finely crafted and handpicked to ensure the highest quality. The diamond-quilted seats are another highlight. You can pick between 15 standard color leathers to wrap your Bentayga interior. They do a great job of providing you with matching colors so you can choose from their pre-selected color combos. For example gold, orange and brown, a collection of blue hues, or greens, reds or purples, and many more groupings. You can then dive into each category and find the exact one you like best. Even the color of the contrast stitching, emblem stitching, steering wheel, driver controls and carpet bindings can be customized to meet your specifications. As far as the exterior color, there are 17 standard and 100 optional exterior color choices which is quite extraordinary. If all this weren’t enough, Bentley can help you create a completely bespoke Bentayga that’s one of a kind and unique to you.

Bentayga has a six liter twin turbocharged W12 engine that can accelerate to a top speed of over 187 mph, making it the world’s fastest SUV. This beast has more power than a Ferrari F50. The beauty of this engine is it provides you 5-90% of the torque within 1.1 second, all at low RPM. You may be surprised to know the Bentayga is actually a very capable SUV both on-road and off. The engine and suspension can adapt to any type of road and angles up to 35°.

Its fuel economy is around 21.6 mpg which is very good considering it has 12 cylinders, 600 hp and 664 lb.-ft. torque. Bentley added the stop-start technology to Bentayga for the first time which definitely improves the mileage. This is also the first time Bentley built an engine for a production car that utilizes port injection as well as direct injection. The SUV switches between the two to deliver a very efficient engine that’s very powerful when you need it to be. They’ve also worked hard to develop twin-scroll turbochargers for better response. A lot of car manufacturers are working on engineering twin scroll turbos to reduce and hopefully eliminate the turbo lag, which a lot of people notice with turbocharged cars.

Back to the luxury options that make a Bentley a Bentley. You can add rear tablets for kids to watch their favorite movie or cartoon for an extra $32k. It also features an event seat in the trunk which slides out if you decide to take this beast tailgating. The seat is also wrapped in leather, and if you happen to be tailgating at night, the built-in stage lighting automatically illuminates from above. Besides the tailgating seat, my personal favorite is the Breitling clock which is only available for four Bentaygas a year, if they’re willing to pay the $160,000 extra charge.

Earlier this year, Bentley announced a new Bentayga model which will feature a V8 engine instead of the W12. This is the newest addition to the Bentayga lineup. The smaller engine has 542 hp and 568 lb.-ft. torque which is still plenty of power to get around town. This model gets you 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Driver assistance technology is also something you can add to this version. It gets you a rearview camera, exit warning, navigation, Bluetooth, WiFi and Apple CarPlay. The V8 version has a lower MSRP than the W12, so it’s definitely more affordable for those who may not care about the additional horsepower of the W12.

Bentley also introduced a diesel model in 2017 which uses the same Audi diesel V8 engine. This is Bentley’s first ever diesel, and the Bentayga is more likely going to be the only Bentley with the diesel option. The diesel gets you 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, making it the slowest Bentayga but of course more efficient.

Bentley confirms they’re also working on a hybrid version of the Bentayga, estimated to be released in 2019. The hybrid is expected to have 456 hp, 520 lb.-ft. torque, and be the first plug-in hybrid Bentley ever. The electric motors will be powered by lithium batteries, providing around 31 miles of all-electric range. Bentley is the first luxury brand building a hybrid SUV for production. They’re also developing a brand new V6 motor to work with the electric motors, providing a very efficient and powerful force. The new intelligent efficiency would allow the car to automatically select the best power source to provide you the longest range. There are also many great tech features such as the ability to remotely set the desired temperature so your Bentayga would be cold in the summer and warm in the winter before you even open step inside. Bentley will start taking orders for the hybrid version toward the end of 2018, but only in selected markets.
